The title of executive producer at some theaters can be a superseding roll to the A.D., but the times article made a clear he’s going to be focusing on more fundraising and institutional building aspects, which actually sounds great.

The slander below is interesting, because it aligns with a minor complaint about her that I heard about her from a person I don’t entirely trust; and there are so many amazing artists who are also monstrous human beings at work, so it’s entirely possible; and if she is, indeed, an abusive boss, I hope that the staff at LCT build a good offense - I’m sure they’ll be warned if this is true; but the vitriol towards her artistry suggests that there is a deeper, dysfunctional dynamic at play with DeBessonet that makes me question the entire argument.

I loved some of the things Bart Sher did in the aughts; asymmetrical flooring aside, Light in the Piazza is a landmark production in my life, but I haven’t been interested in anything he’s done in years. And then I don’t think I’ve seen much of Lear’s work, but between her Good Person and the clips I’ve seen of Into the Woulds on YouTube, she has a strong aesthetic, a great sense of humor, and just enough delicate camp to piss off people who think theater must be eternally sophisticated.

We have two people here are saying all you need to do a good play is great actors, but Lear made Brecht enjoyable. Lear and her many, many collaborators kept Brecht true to his roots through an uplifting, engaging, diverse, and deliciously queer production. Even with Taylor Mac in the title role - or maybe a specially 🤭 - It takes a good director to pull that off.

That’s all I really know.
