I remembering absolutely LOVING Okonedo's performance, while finding Lewis to be good-not-great. At the time I found him to be a bit over-the-top and not especially genuine. Which might sound like a strange criticism for a play that is itself so over-the-top and bizarre, but I feel like Okonedo captured a better balance than he did. But then again, his is arguably the more difficult character for an actor to excavate.
Overall though, I remember finding the production quite funny, in a quirky sort of way, despite (or perhaps because of) how strange and discomforting it is. |
