Although I agree with Singapore/Fling below that the festival's staffing model blew up in their face, I think there are a lot of other problems facing arts festivals in Berkshire County.

Unless you live in the area or have a house or friends who will put you up, it is actually quite expensive to travel and stay in the area. I visited a couple of the venues this summer and if you had no concern for your carbon footprint it would probably be cheaper to fly to Europe and go to a festival there. At Tanglewood I read somewhere that the new director was proposing a chartered bus program to import New Yorkers there for the day because the New Yorkers aren't coming in the way they used to. Add to that an aging audience who are less energetic about having house guests and driving back home on country lanes at night and you have major problems. If the Berkshire venues were teleported to the Hudson Valley there might be less of a problem but they would have to alter to suit that younger and probably even more affluent demographic. If I were WTF, I would think about doing a WTF SOUTH pilot program in Kingston, NY.
