This reminds me of a story somebody connected with "42nd Street" told me about Dolores Gray playing Dorothy Brock. In her last scene, when she waits for Peggy in her wheelchair, she has to say the lines: "You gotta take it easy, Peggy. Let the audience come to you. May I show you what I mean?"
And contradicted all that by belting out the first lines of "About a quarter to nine" from the top of her lungs...
