I've never seen it, and I kinda don't want to because it seems like a one-off guilty pleasure listen. Fun, energetic songs without much behind them.

If I were to reimagine it and try to stage it, I would certainly dispense with the skates. I'd have the little boy be awkward and lonely and think the toy trains are his only friends. One by one the trains would come to life as other kids. He would become Rusty. The show would proceed thereafter with kids running around the "basement" as trains, but kids at heart. At the end they'd return to being toys, but the boy would (for the first time) ask if he can go out and play with other kids.
