In defense of the original post's commentary on the sociopolitical implications: I went to a signing of Gregory Maguire's novel Mirror, Mirror in 2003, at the now razed Barnes and Nobel on 66th and Columbus or thereabouts. Winnie Holzman was there, and they spoke at length about Wicked's development. Holtzman specifically mentioned "the coup," the first time I'd heard the 2000 election characterized thus, and the implications in writing the libretto's Wizard with that election as an influence. But beyond that, all of the lines like Glinda's "as terrifying as terror is" were certainly informed by a post-9/11 world. The show opened on 10/30/03, and the morality of the Iraq War was creating the nation's biggest political schism (When Laura Bush took her daughters, there was social media speculation about whether the show might feel like an indictment of the administration). Timetable wise: Holtzman was revising the book for the West Coast premiere in the spring and summer of 2003. The Iraq War began on March 20, 2003. Clearly, that era informed Holzman's adjustments. And she went on record as revising the book extensively through that period.
