BroadwayTonyJ, thank you. I don't remember the details of the Signature production, either, but I don't remember any emphasis on yearning for physical contact by the straight character. I saw a local production recently, and I didn't get that sense there. I guess I personally think the show is better if there's no raising in the audience's mind of whether either character is looking for a romantic/sexual connection from the other, because I think that muddles the main theses of the play. Ryan is not very introspective at the beginning of the play, and it's certainly a legitimate interpretation that he would confuse his need for connection with a desire for physical contact, but I guess I'm not sure a director should embrace that. But apparently some directors don't agree! ;)
