I was lucky to see the original, and my 13-year-old self was totally transported. Carol Burnett, of course, was brilliant. One of the great comic performances of the Golden Age. The other memorable performance was Jane White's as the Queen. Hilarious. Sadly, Jack Gilford had already left the cast by the time I saw it (at the St. James) so I didn't get to see his take on the king. (He left Mattress to do Paddy Chayefsky's The Tenth Man, which I was also lucky to have seen on that same trip.) When I got home, I memorized the cast album. (I can still sing virtually the entire score, including the overture -- but I'll spare you.) It's a buoyant and tuneful score. Shy, In a Little While, Normandy are just a few of the first-rate songs from the inspired Mary Rodgers/Marshall Barer collaboration. I also have fond memories of the spare but clever set design by William and Jean Eckart. As for the revival -- I think it's terrific, even better on Broadway than it was at Encores. Sutton is killing it. Michael Urie is ah-mah-zing. The rest of the cast is strong, especially Anna Gasteyer as the queen. What a delightful, happy, wildly entertaining show.
