Well, although Evans was approached, it can't be said that she nearly participated. She was all but retired from the stage by then. In 1971. she had to leave, on doctor's orders, a production of Anouilh's Dear Antoine in which she was appearing at Chichester. Later that year she came very close to dying. She was able to do a few film and television roles after that, but the only stage work she did was a solo evening of readings, which I think she largely performed in a chair, called Edith Evans . . . and Friends, which she played a few times in various places for short runs (or possibly just single nights here and there), ending with a short run in London in 1974.
