I saw it at Encores!, but have not seen the transfer. I did not care for most of the changes and additions made by Amy Sherman-Palladino. There was nothing wrong with the original book...it has a sort of timeless fairy tale aspect coupled with what must have been a very contemporary sensibility in the 1950's. And most of the jokes still land, if played properly with the right style. I see why it was thought that Sherman-Palladino would be right for this project as Princess Winnifred is a very modern woman crashing into this very traditional fairy tale world, not unlike the Mrs. Maisel character in Sherman-Palladino's THE MARVELOUS MRS. MAISEL and the character that Sutton Foster herself played in Sherman-Palladino's BUNHEADS. But everything that Sherman-Palladino adds just sounds wrong to me, like she's trying to overlay her own sensibility onto the 1950's contemporary stuff that was already overlaid on the traditional fairy tale stuff. It's just too much.

I also hate that she cut the Minstrel character and the song "The Minstrel, The Jester, and I." This was especially egregious at Encores!, even though I realize that Encores! has transitioned into a Broadway revival try out venue and is no longer much interested in presenting material as close to the way it would have been seen/heard on opening night as possible. I understand why she did it...Encores! had the newly-minted Tony winner J. Harrison Ghee in the combined role and wanted to showcase them as much as possible. I get it. I do. But I still hate that choice. I was hoping that, with Ghee busy in Chicago with MIDNIGHT IN THE GARDEN OF GOOD AND EVIL, she'd restore the character and the song for Broadway. Nope. Didn't happen.
