In the original, most of the opening banter was ad libbed. The published script has lines for Luisa, Carla, and Stephanie Necrophorus, but there is a stage direction stating simply that the other women engage with the audience until the conversation rises to a din. I assume the character introductions in the recent production emerged during rehearsal from the cast and director.

Speaking of ad libbing, Carolee Carmello was very funny while intermingling with the audience during "Folies Bergère." Flirting with a man in the front row, she said, "Oh, you wore your best tee-shirt!"
