Yeah, that subtitle was one of the things I didn't like. Actually, I think the whole opening was some of the worst parts of the show. I absolutely hated what the director did with the Overture (and continued doing throughout the show) where different women would be "conducting" - no, the whole point of the show is Guido thinks he's in charge at the beginning, which is why he conducts.

Anyway, if you remember, the show starts with Guido lying on the ground underneath the lighting bar. In the second act, that's how he ends the Waltz from Nine, ready to die. I believe the director thought he was being clever by saying "this is the climax of the show, now we'll go back in time six days and see how he gets there." Unfortunately, I don't think any audience understood that, or at least most didn't. My mom (who is unfamiliar with the show) didn't even get that Guido was about to kill himself before "Getting Tall" - lying under the lights is far more abstract than picking up a gun and pointing it at his temple.

It seems like most on this board liked the production more than I did, which is great! But as good as the cast was, and Steven Pasquale is definitely the best Guido I've seen since Banderas (and sings better than Banderas), I thought the production was a C- as best. "My Husband Makes Movies" was some of the worst musical staging I've seen in a long time, distracting to the point where the audience couldn't even follow the song.

I didn't hate the cuts to the operetta section, or at least I wouldn't have if I didn't already know every word of this script by heart. I don't think "Amour" is necessary in the show, even though I do really enjoy it musically.
