This is nothing new. Recent trailers of ''Wonka,'' ''The Color Purple'' and ''Mean Girls'' also pretty much hid the fact that they were musicals.

A movie musical can't be a hit if it's only attracting audiences that ''love the artform.'' There ARE many folks who don't like musicals, so you don't want to scare them off. Even if they were ''tricked'' into seeing, say, ''Wonka,'' if they love the movie, they can enjoy it. But they gotta see it first.

A hit movie musical is still a rarity. See the big-screen flops of ''West Side Story,'' ''In the Heights,'' ''Dear Evan Hansen,'' ''Cats,'' etc.

With the exception of ''Hamilton,'' musicals don't draw well on streaming either: ''tick, tick, BOOM,'' ''Diana: The Musical,'' ''Come From Away,'' etc.

Universal's calculation is simple: Broadway fans will come anyway. But they need to reach the folks who don't ordinarily race to see singing and dancing.
