Once upon a time, Broadway music WAS pop. Don't forget that. So in some ways it still is, even though pop music tastes have changed.

I remember someone out here complaining once that the pop-influenced score of Wicked didn't sound enough like Oz, like the iconic film did. (With no mention of "The Wiz" which was odd.) But really, Baum probably wouldn't have identified with the style of the 1930's pop music in the film. Times change.
