I recall in interviews that Pasek & Paul said they were specifically hired to write a "pop" score for SHOWMAN, and they certainly succeeded in that. My students, even those not familiar with musicals, loved those songs.
However, Cy Coleman & Michael Stewart's BARNUM score is much more true musical theatre: full of jaunty melody (try not to bounce with joy during "Come Follow the Band"), lyrically clever (Tiny Tim's "Bigger Isn't Better"), romantic ("Colors of My Life"), sassy and character-driven ("Thank God I'm Old" and "There's a Sucker Born Every Minute"). It's real Broadway music. Pasek & Paul can write that too, and I think we need more of that specificity and distinctly musical theatre tradition on Broadway, and less "pop." Of course, at least the songs for GREATEST SHOWMAN were written for that project, NOT just catalog songs or another jukebox musical.
