For someone making the argument that the show holds up, you really do trash it. But yes, the main problem is that it’s not a terribly compelling version of Barnum‘s life, and the secondary problem is that some of the acts have not aged well, such as the comic number he does with an enslaved woman who was forced to perform against her will (which the show doesn’t even mention).

It’s a play that is very much of its time, totally fine but not More than that, and I doubt that we’ll see it on a major stage again. It just doesn’t hold up.
