It's a better show than most people seem to think, with a really wonderful score.

The problem isn't so much that the show doesn't "hold up", it's that the magic and gimmick of the way the show was staged is not magical or impressive to people anymore for Broadway prices, and the score is not the sound that is in fashion, and the story isn't compelling or moving enough to stand up to what audiences seem to want from big musicals these days.

The times changed for what's gonna sell on Broadway, but the show itself does "hold" "up", I'd say.
