I could not agree more! Her “adaptation” of OUAM removes so much subtext and well-drawn characterizations, making the piece one-dimensional and burdened with recycled jokes and cheap, muggy schtick. (That combined with the flimsy, unimaginative, “direction” makes it feel like community theatre with a good budget.) The piece certainly didn’t need any help and it couldn’t be further removed from the authors’ intended tone. If it weren’t for the gifted performers (who, like ITW, have clearly done all the work themselves), the production would be as flat as a pancake. Both she and deBessonet should stay away from musical theatre altogether.
