I worked on a production of MATTRESS years ago where the choreographer got a dick joke in without making any changes to the text at all.

It was in "Shy," Winnifred sings the lyric "And it's likely to fall into place..." and the choreographer had two of the knights kneel and create a little seat for her with their knees, where she sits for this lyric. "When I'm suddenly face to face..." The knights stand and dump Winnifred on the floor and face her on each side. Winnifred pauses and looks right and left straight into both their crotches and then to the audience. "With a pair of pants." I don't know if I'm describing it well, but it was hysterical and the actress really sold it.

I did not like a lot of the additions that Sherman-Palladino made to the script for MATTRESS and I miss the days when writers were simply asked to adapt scripts for a concert presentation. I really didn't care for cutting the Minstrel character and the song "The Minstrel, The Jester, and I." I don't think the script really needs much "improving." Especially at Encores!, where the job shouldn't be to "fix" anything, but rather to present it. I realize that's not really the Encores! mission anymore, and it's more of a tryout venue for Broadway revivals, but it still bothers me.
