Cats questions--old and new

Caught up with The Jellicle Ball the other night. So fun. Sorry If I missed this covered elsewhere but were the original Cats creators always allowed to make adjustments to the words, or was special permission given to this new production? As mentioned by many, the songs primarily remain unchanged. The most notable lyric change to me--since it is repeated over and over, is Bustopher Jones having his pronouns changed from "he/his" to "they". This worked fine for me in the context of the Ball setting, I was just surprised textual changes of any kind were authorized.

Another change. which may have actually occured prior to this new production, is at the end of Gus he used to say "I once played Growltiger" and when I saw it the other night he sang "I once played... ???" I could not understand what he said! It sounds like "Lila" or something that started with an "L". Anyone know what it was?

Which brings me to the question not about the new production. Was there ever an official statement from the creators or director about the removal of Growltiger's Last Stand? And when did it first happen? I'd like to discuss it further but don't want to until I actually know the official reason for its removal. I had heard it might be because it was considered racist, but I am not sure if that is something others have said, or if that is what the authors said, and I am most interested in the author's explanation.
