The show last night ran 3 hours. I didn't get home until well after midnight. I was too worn out to post.

Midnight in the Garden right now is a sprawling, messy, highly, even spectacularly entertaining new musical. The best thing about it is J. Harrison Ghee as the transgender performer The Lady Chablis -- it's a Tony worthy performance that is not to be missed IMO. Also quite good is Jason Robert Brown's score, which is his best in several years, especially songs like "Let There Be Light", "Since My Mama Died", "True Crime", "It Takes Your Breath Away", and others. Sierra Boggess is very funny and sings beautifully as a prominent Southern preservationist, although the role is not well defined and too much of a stereotype. The scenic design is stunning and the costumes are a knockout. That's the good stuff.

The story is about the colorful denizens of Savannah, GA in the 1980's. Unfortunately there is too much story, too many characters with not enough development, not enough focus, and not a lot of cohesion. The main story line is the relationship between real life individuals Jim Williams, a respected antiques restorer, and Danny Hansford, a young, handsome prostitute, who was Williams' assistant and lover. Hansford's life was cut short violently. Williams was charged with his murder but pled self-defense. Other story lines are about the voodoo practitioner Minerva; the Savannah society ladies; and the life and career of The Lady Chablis, who functions as a sort of Greek chorus/ narrator.

Despite the show's length and many flaws, I had a good time. The show does need a lot of work if it wants to succeed on Broadway IMO.
