The film of "Call Me Madam" had been out of circulation for many years. Now that it is available, it's probably the best representation of Merman on screen in one of her famous Broadway starring roles, and she's wonderful, surrounded by a great cast including Donald O'Connor and Vera-Ellen and a beautiful-voiced George Sanders. Merman is big and funny and is pretty much apparently giving the same performance she gave on Broadway, but it works. Now, I think with the right director, Merman might have pulled back for some of the more lyrical songs in "Gypsy" since she does pull back some in "Call Me Madam" at times. Merman was proud that she considered herself to be doing some real acting in "Gypsy" and might have been more receptive to a director making the lyrical songs like "Small World" more intimate.

Judy Garland would have been a great Rose, too, considering that, in addition to her great talents, she had the experience of having a stage mother and being in vaudeville with her sisters. She would had have so much to drawn upon in her performance.
