I was one of the folx who stood for Bebe at my performance. It did feel like a reflex in that I didn’t even think about it. My body led and the rest of me followed. I think you’re right, though, that part of the reason it receives such an enthusiastic response is because it’s one of the rare honest, emotional, person-to-person moments in the production. But I think that all of her scenes with Steven Skybell did as well, just with less of a punch because they’re earlier in the story before things get really dark. I agree with the poster who said they’re the only ones at the August Wilson who seem to understand character.

I loved Carol Shelley at Studio 54 too, but my favorite during that run was Schneider standby Barbara Andres. One of the only “plump” Schneiders I’ve ever seen and there were alternate lyrics during So What, which were fun to hear. But what most stayed with me from her performance was how she seemed to light up in the presence of Shultz, and how that light came to dim after Tomorrow Belongs to Me.
