I was probably 16 or 17...I was doing a college tour of NYU and had convinced my parents to stay afterward and take the subway uptown to see a Broadway show.

I had seen the movie several times by that point, so I knew the basic story, but i chose it because it was such a well known show and had recently announced that it was closing after so many years, something people didn't think was even possible.

As I recall it was a bit hard to follow from the balcony because we were so high up and far away and ACL doesn't feature a lot of spectacle that plays to the balcony. It was a bunch of tiny people far far away. But I loved it and, shortly after that, started coming up for day trips on a fairly regular basis. Some of the first things I saw after ACL were GRAND HOTEL, CITY OF ANGELS, and GYPSY.

As a teen, I'd never felt so at home in a place I'd never been to before and that was a weird sensation. I ended up not being able to afford to go to NYU, even after a generous financial aid package (it was 30K a year in those days), but I did finally move to the city in 1996 and to Hell's Kitchen in 2000, where I've been ever since.
