Yesterday I watched about half of the film again while skimming through the play's text. The screenplay is definitely an adaptation of what Lawrence and Lee wrote -- it's faithful, but not identical to the play. I would estimate that at least 30% to 50% of the film's dialogue in some scenes is by Comden and Green, especially in Act 1, Scene 3.

The character Ralph Devine in the play -- he runs the village school that Mame enrolls young Patrick in -- comes across as a pretty sleazy individual. He keeps hitting on Mame and apparently wants to be one of her lovers. His remarks about educating Patrick, who is an innocent, 10-year old little boy, are highly disturbing and irresponsible. In the film the Comden-Green character Acacius Page is much more professional, somewhat spiritual, and definitely less threatening.
