Of course, if you watch the film of "The Matchmaker" where Shirley Booth as Dolly enters the Harmonia Gardens, she's received as politely and professionally as any other well-dressed patron to their establishment would be and brought to see Mr. Vandergelder. I don't believe she's recognized by anyone working there, let alone greeted warmly (or rapturously). Hey, it turned out to be a socko spot for a musical number, but it was all invented by Jerry Herman and perhaps with an assist by Michael Stewart as book writer. Was there a line of dialogue in the play where it acknowledges she had never dined there before?
