I mostly know the musical Mame by the OBC recording, which is excellent, and by Angela Lansbury's superb performance of "If He Walked into My Life" on one of Perry Como's TV shows. Mame unfortunately doesn't get done a lot in regional theatre any more because although the score is excellent, the show's book doesn't hold up, and it pales next to the 1958 film of Auntie Mame.
I would love to see a major revisal of Mame, which used the Comden and Green screenplay as a blueprint for a revised libretto, but I'm guessing that may be impossible. |
