...when I say this production, though, I'm referring to the London mounting and, more specifically, the basically no-name cast I saw perform it in November last year. No, it wasn't Jake Shears, who was either out for that performance or on vacation. I went in deeply skeptical (especially after seeing those ghastly clips of Redmayne & company, plus some of their subsequent replacements on a variety of TV shows), but I came out a convert, having been utterly transfixed by the performance in London.

I also abhor some conservative theatregoers who are always railing on about "DEI" or "woke casting" etc. But, in this case, yes, I did think it was rather jarring to intentionally cast Black actors as Cliff. I honestly think a Black Emcee or even a Black Sally could work, but Cliff is the dominant character in the more traditional book scenes and, as others have said, his interactions with Ernst make absolutely no sense in the context of Weimar or WWII Germany.
