You're reacting the normal way when such violations to the material are obvious -- people pushing back against your opinion must *really* not understand how CABARET is structured ... so, some clarity:

Ernst (literally, a Nazi) targets Cliff to be his patsy and smuggle goods across borders, while befriending him, helping him find housing, helping him find a job, and enjoying the nightlife together.

Now, let me ask the esteemed readers of this board: does it make sense for you that, specifically in Hitler's Germany, that a Nazi would befriend a black American? A GAY black American? Be seen partying and drinking and learning from a gay black man? Do we think that German border police are treating black foreigners well? Do we think that a Nazi would appreciate the assistance of a gay black man?

In the same breath in the same scene, Ernst is disgusted by Herr Schultz' Judaism, and turns to his black gay American friend Cliff for support? It's idiocy. This production is atrocious, and -- sadly -- this is one of the more minor betrayals of the director and production team. People "blah blah blah" the usual language around color-blind or inclusive casting, but this show is structurally built off specific racial and ethnic implications, which this production throws to the garbage in the interest of being CUTTING EDGE. IT'S SO EDGY DON'T YOU KNOW.
