This was delightful and delightfully short. Very theater related as much of it takes place in the world of the theater and it is by a playwright and much of the source material is from another play by Mérimée, although based on real Peruvian historical characters. There is a great theater relationship between characters Uncle Pio (an echt Theater Queen) and his protegée the gifted and apparently amoral actress La Périchole (in the original Spanish - the "perra-chola"... a half indigenous, half European mixed race woman). As in the other early Thorton Wilder novels it is a delicious blend of close to the vest camp with an increasing tenderness towards its characters. | |
