Where are you seeing that on the wikipedia page for the show? I'm not seeing that. (Not that I ever trust wikipedia. There are lots of errors there, at least when it comes to theatre.) I do see this on the wikipedia page for the musical Prettybelle: "Champion wanted a 'no-glitz approach' and so the set design was a unit set that had to 'take on . . . different aspects . . . and wasn't complex.'"

Here is cast member and dance captain Bert Michaels quoted in John Anthony Gilvey's bio of Champion: "Up to this point, Gower was known for glitz and glamor, and he wanted to show that he was a more versatile director and had other things in him. He wanted this one to break away to express other parts in him that weren't fulfilled in the glitzy Gower musicals, and this was a very dark piece, especially at this juncture in our history."
