Dunne was actually four months younger than Lawrence. There are various stories about how Lawrence came to be Anna, including that she or her agent brought the property to Rodgers and Hammerstein. But it's also said that Dorothy Hammerstein and Dorothy Rodgers brought it to their husbands, thinking it would make a good musical. And it may be that both stories are true.

Dunne, of course, had not appeared onstage, at least not in a run, in a very long time.

Earlier, when Lawrence kept delaying signing her Lady in the Dark contract, the creative team considered asking Dunne, and they may have told Lawrence they would do that if she didn't finally sign the contract.

I have read, although I think not from a necessarily reliable source, that Darryl Zanuck did not want to cast Dunne in Anna and the King of Siam, even though she made it known that she wanted the role. He thought Dunne was too old for the role even then. He wanted Gene Tierney for the role, but there was some conflict, and Tierney couldn't do it.
