A very close friend worked on the production both on and off-Broadway. Based on what they said, my understanding is that the simulated sex scenes were not the cause of Owens having been labeled difficult. The bigger issue was that he was resistant to the director's notes and, at a certain point in previews, was even more resistant to incorporating rewrites, an essential part of the process in the development of a new musical. I saw the show off-Broadway during its closing weekend, at which point Owens could barely phonate. It was one of the worst sung performances I've ever seen in professional theatre. That being said, my friend did not specifically cite vocal difficulties as having played into the decision to replace him.

Spivey's health challenges during the Broadway run were widely discussed, especially here, but when I saw him as Usher, he sounded terrific and gave a far more sympathetic, less abrasive interpretation of the role. I thought he elevated everything around him and, had it not been for his absences, would have won the Tony. (He still would have gotten my vote.)
