I'm 100% certain TCM aired The Merry Widow several years ago -- it's quite enjoyable!
Both of the films you mention were big-budget A-pictures, accompanied by orchestras in first-run theaters. (Back then, a cinema with only a piano was either a small cinema in a big city, or perhaps the only cinema in a small town.) MGM, which produced those films, sent out orchestral sheet music with their major releases. I haven't seen the scores -- though they may exist in archives -- but I'd be very surprised if they didn't include themes from the stage shows. |
