If you'd said that the off-broadway (West Village) production was a hot ticket because of Cole's following (and reputation, mixed with the specifics of this play and its title/subject)... I'd fully agree with you.

I was at one of the performances week 1 or 2, and it was packed with people who knew Cole's work and were pumped to see this pre-ordained camp masterpiece. And it delivered, as did Cole's performance.

I think the buzz and success (artistically and at the Lortel box office) is what laid the groundwork to build into a successful broadway run.

If they're opened cold on Broadway without utilizing the Cole fanbase and the other elements I mentioned mixing together in just the most advantageous ways, I think it's a different story. And the story wouldn't be that there's no way it would become a lightening-in-a-bottle hit, based on the reviews and word of mouth that would quickly come, but more that a Broadway mounting and marketing campaign wouldn't have been *funded* without that hit off-bway run to build on, and that off-bway run *can* be said to be in large part due to Cole's following.
