SPOILERS:

The wokenesses (as I called them) are valid as part of this interpretation. The poor people are featured, and there’s a strong criticism of the link between capitalism and gangsterism, and we’re never transported by the romantic elements of the story. I don’t think Fitzgerald was concerned about the wealthy per se. He was pointing to his particular characters’ failures in integrity.

There are modern details that are clever but just not warranted. Nick and Jordan are pretty gay. The decadence of the parties seems a bit like ‘Chicago’ with bulging male muscles, drag, and bisexuality. Wolfsheim’s song and excellent characterization are very very strong and undermine the nobility I think we should see in Jay. And Gatsby’s father, as s signal to integrity, shows up at the end in the braids of a Native American.

Fitzgerald captured the beauty and brilliance of wealth and aspiration, not just the criticism of capitalist policies. But by going so far in this, the authors have created a very interesting interpretation.

But there is beauty in the music. I mean…this is so worth seeing. And Nick’s opening snd closing moments are beautiful, the Daisy sings with great feeling. It just didn’t break my heart.
