Essie Miller doesn't sing much in Take Me Along, really just a few verses of "Oh, Please" with her husband Nat, some of which is just spoken. Fitzgerald could have handled that satisfactorily. However, she would not have been able to sing the role of Lily, which Eileen Herlie performed masterfully in the 1959 original production.

I guess time took a toll on Fitgerald's singing voice. She actually sings rather nicely on the 1939 soundtrack recording of Wuthering Heights, at least I think she is doing her own singing -- it's really just a snippet -- I'm actually surprised that it was preserved on the master tapes.
