| I remember late one night in 2016 being at my computer here in Brooklyn when I first heard the report of a shooting at a nightclub/bar in Orlando Florida.Seeing the name of the bar i somehow knew and research confirmed immediately that it was a bar for the LGBTQ community. I remember the next day at the Tony Awards when Many presenters and winners announced their grief and support for the community and for survivors over the incident. Lin-Manuel Miranda, a winner that night for Hamilton read a poem He dedicated to the grieving community. Part of that grieving community has put together a musical theater piece to show themselves before, during and briefly after the tragedy. I saw that piece titled "From Here" yesterday. I came away from that piece in tears. The writing and directing is amateur in the original sense of the word that is done out of love (or in this case need) for the subject rather than a polished professional effort. Each of the performers convinced me that they were indeed a member of the Orlando LGBTQ community and laughed in loved before they were forced to go through this collective trauma. I was moved by the way they clung together and supported wach other through this. When we finally got to the point where the shooting was taking place and the community was reacting, I was torn apart in a grief I rarely experience in a theater. My memory of that night became very fresh in my mind. Talking after with the friend about what I admired about the show, I could not give voice to what I felt in those moments without stopping, pausing and taking a few breaths. This play was done at the Orlando Fringe Festival in 2019 so because of Covid is given a delayed engagement here. I am glad. I don't know if I would have been able to hold myself togetehr five years ago. I am glad it is here now because with all the anti-LGBTQ prejudice arising and indeed all kinds of hate running through the land we need a reminder and maybe not a slick nor polished but a heartfelt remeinder at that! | |
