| Judy Holliday's standbys during the New York run included Phyllis Newman, Marge Redmond, Allyn Ann McLerie and June Ericson. In London Janet Blair and Julie Wilson played Ella, Silvia Pinal starred in Mexico and Shani Wallis headlined the Australian production. The leading roles in BELLS were very attractive for performers in Summer Stock and regional theatre over the years including Jane Russell, Anne Jeffreys, Jane Morgan, Peggy Cass, Martha Raye, Imogene Coca, Dody Goodman, Ruta Lee, Julia Meade, Mimi Hines & Phil Ford, Betty White & Allen Ludden, Gordon & Sheila MacRae, Edie Adams, Pamela Britton, Rita Moreno (with Tab Hunter), Patti Karr (with Van Johnson), Karen Morrow (with Gardner McKay), Florence Henderson (with Dean Jones), Julius La Rosa (with Jacqueline James), Patricia Wilson, Adrienne Angel, Joe Namath (with Susan Terry), Lynne Wintersteller, Carolee Carmello, Kate Baldwin, Kelli O'Hara and Victoria Clark. The one that got away seems to be Shelley Winters who was announced to play Ella in stock but was replaced before rehearsals began. | |
