I saw it at the age of 15, and thought it was kind of a hot mess, but I enjoyed it a lot more than many other shows of the period. I remember being surprised at how bad the reviews were. I recall reading somewhere years later that it had one of those unfortunate opening nights where the show just didn't click, but my preview audience went crazy for it. I remember that it was selling so badly, BTW, that previews were going for $3 balcony, $4 mezzanine and $5 orchestra. At what was then called the Martin Beck, if I remember properly. |
