It's kind of sad that you don't seem interested in even considering that a lot, even just some, of the many people who seemed to either praise HWA and/or enjoy it immensely, were actively lying, to the world or to themselves, to uphold the idea that Sondheim is infallible or that his final show must be a great one.

The same people would have been pre-accused of that with Bounce/Road Show, and yet it wasn't met with nearly love or acclaim. And while he was still alive for it, he was quite old, quite past his prime, and it was presumed by most to be his last new show (and presumed that is part of why it was produced and developed so many times until its final version despite that many would have advised they just call it after Bounce in DC).

I'll never not be a huge Sondheim fan. But I can genuinely say I adored watching and hearing Here We Are. I saw it twice and felt the same both time. It's not one of his greatest works, but I'd rank it above Road Show, which is above The Frogs, both of which are probably above Saturday Night. I bet a lot of people would rank it above Anyone Can Whistle too.

Whatever it was, and whether or not it had the entire score he might have written had he lived another year, or had he started writing it in 1997, I thought it was fantastic. If that show in that production is some friends placating an octogenarian, then maybe more octogenarians should be placated.
