The film Dreamgirls didn't cut into the run or reputation of the show, but it did add music that is now included in stage productions because people expect it. That happened with Grease, too, but the title number in Grease doesn't hurt that plot any, Hopelessly Devoted to You is a nice addition and You're the One That I want is superior to All Choked Up and it serves the same function. But in Dreamgirls, Listen, added to give Beyonce an opportunity to really sing, is not good for the show. If Deena can actually sing like that she and Effie are both vocal powerhouses. They BOTH have the voice. That's not the text of the show, and now, because audiences want to hear that song, we seem to be stuck with it. Deena even has lines to the effect that she knows Effie is the one who can sing and, while that can now be played as Deena not knowing or trusting her own power, it's stronger as written: Deena is pretty and smooth, Lorell is sassy and Effie is the voice.
