They should have taken the risk to give the film to Michael Greif or a very modernist type. Ben gave a heart-wrenching performance onstage. It was one of the greatest ever. His work in the film, starting with his hair, was awful. And what had been a remarkable synthesis of MTV and a musical onstage came off as a realistic film with some odd songs. Unfortunate, but probably with good intentions.
When Streisand played in FUNNY GIRL the film, she was given the very best of directors (Wyler). Platt was sabotaged in that. And then there’s a question. Who would have been a great film director for him. Do we have a GREAT film director?
