I wouldn't agree it had run its course because pre-pandemic it seemed unstoppable with very high grosses no matter who was in it. But coming back from the pandemic, it seems like it just had too many bad weeks to fully recover. Even though the movie barely reached audiences in theaters, I think many more watched it from home and the memeification of Ben Platt reached far and wide. I do think directly or indirectly the movie had a significant impact on the perception of the musical and therefore its box office. It has certainty had a lasting impact on Ben Platt's reputation.
