In terms of enhancement money, I don’t know anything about the shows last season at Playwrights, but it’s less common to find enhancement for plays versus musicals. And the fact that Adam excepted the Tony after David makes me think that they produced it in-house.

In terms of the cuts, the article that I saw mentioned that one eliminated position was in the literary department, which is artistic, and another was Adam’s assistant, which is also a position that is often integral to artistic. And that tracks, because theaters will almost never cut development or other rules that are perceived to be about the raising of the money and the selling of the art, but they’ll underpay and eliminate the people who actually make the art.

In terms of the casting people, that’s actually great news.

And to get back to the original poster, I’m still not sure what any of this has to do with the cash flow for last season. OP bemoans that solo plays were produced alongside two splashy productions, but does that mean that OP would rather have had five productions produced on a small budget and then Playwrights would still need to have laid off a portion of their staff, but we wouldn’t have gotten such high-quality productions of their two big shows?

Or does OP genuinely believe that box office and commercial success can make a break a theater in a single season?
