| I saw the Sunday evening performance of The Wiz. Overall, enjoyable for this fun score and the barn burning performance by Melody A. Betts in the dual roles of Aunt Em and Evilene. She was a force of nature (even more intense than the Tornado!) However, a few elements were missing from this production: 1. Where was Toto? 2. Where was Uncle Henry? 3. Why were Dorothy’s silver slippers so cheap looking? 4. The leads. Dorothy, Scarecrow, and Lion were all out at that performance. Several actors in smaller roles were also out. All of the replacements were very good - no shade there - but I was disappointed not to see the original cast members in their respective roles. Side note: Alan Mingo Jr was excellent as The Wiz and seems ideally cast. I’m having a hard time picturing Wayne Brady in that role. Glad I saw it, but a mixed bag for me. It’s not quite the revival of The Wiz I was hoping for. |
