| I wonder how much the 75cent royalty check went for. $20,480.. That headline is misleading. The auctioneer is gratified at the attendance and camaraderie of Sondheim fans in the room. But he's not quite stunned at the bidding- But having been in the auction business for a long time, I’ve seen this kind of thing happen before. It’s not unusual for a bidder who really wants to corner the attention on a lot to jump ahead as a tactic to see if he could secure the thing. Someone said here the other day that auction houses routinely underprice estimates in order to draw people in. |
