It would be interesting to know what was going through the head of the person who bid $20K, particularly when that person did it off the bat for the second set of books that had a good chance of going for less than the first set. I don't think it was a stunt for the reasons you mentioned. Maybe that person had some kind of anxiety and just wanted the auction to be done. Or maybe they had some place to go (they were very far behind at that point; it was estimated that the auction would take about 450 minutes, or 7.5 hours, but I think it was more like 10.5 hours by the end). In any event, that person did not seem to be concerned about whether they were getting the lowest possible winning bid for whatever reason. It was kind of odd.

There was somebody in the room who would just jump to $500 for most of the puzzles at the end, but that was actually kind of useful because they were all going to get there eventually anyway, and going through $60-$70-$80-$90-etc was kind of painful after so many hours.

Pre-pandemic, there was someone at the Flea Market who would just outbid everybody, over and over. He must have gotten 10-20 things, at least, at the silent auction each year. That's great for Broadway Cares and the people they are trying to help, but it made bidding sometimes seem a bit pointless once he entered the bidding because you knew he would outbid you in the end, so why bother? It may have depressed the overall totals.
