Speaking of ''Follies in Concert,'' that was the starriest concert I've ever seen: Barbara Cook, Lee Remick, Mandy Patinkin, George Hearn, Elaine Stritch, Carol Burnett, Liliane Montevecchi, etc. I'm still annoyed that PBS' ''Great Performances'' offered only clips, instead of the entire glorious gala event from 1985. It's a miracle I even got into it at Avery Fisher Hall. It was sold out like that. I was in my 20s, and I was so naive and stupid. I actually wrote to Sondheim, with whom I had a friendly correspondence by mail, for help. He arranged house seats for me and my friend Peter Foley. And we sat in front of Hal Prince! |
