| ...sorry, GMB. Gotta call it like I see it. I will say, I 100% agree with you that there are SOME older, white theatregoers who are predictably stuck in the mud and made uncomfortable when pushed to consider new, broader perspectives. The kinds of people who complain endlessly about a Black woman being cast as Mdme Rose, but who swear it's because it's "technically" inaccurate. BUT, I'm sorry, two things can be true at once. You can love and embrace greater change, evolution, representation and diversity in the theatre AND also find Ariana DeBose incredibly grating, charmless and humorless. I'm not old (well, I'm technically an elderly millennial... so maybe I am), I'm not white and I'm a happy member of the LGBTQ+ community. I also consider myself a progressive Lefty. But, I refuse to use those reasons define my opinion of DeBose's hosting talent. Also, for the record, one need only check Twitter after one of Ariana's hosting duties (like the BAFTAs or the Tonys) to see plenty of young people rolling their eyes at her charmless, try-hard hosting performances. Hosting is a very unique and specific type of talent that requires the type of performer who can both genuinely make an "insider" connection with the artform and the community being honored AND have enough of a wry distance to simultaneously comment on the proceedings -- hopefully with some genuine humor. It's what made NPH such a great host. I think virtually every host of the modern Tonys era has out-performed Ariana in this respect -- obviously, to different degrees. There are some, like Audra, who are better at the "insider" track than the outsider, but I'd argue even she is a more skilled presenter and comedic presence. I'm all for moving beyond the white male, middle-aged paradigm for hosts, but Ariana DeBose did not... do the thing! |
